1 Cor. 4:6-21 — "Are You Puffed Up or Deflated?"
Theme Verse - Rom. 12:3 "For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himselt more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith."
Are You Puffed Up or Deflated?
1. a right perspective of self and of others
2. let the air out
3. a demonstration of humility
Prov. 11:2 "When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wisdom."
Prov. 16:18-19 "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud."
Prov. 29:23 "A man's pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor."
1 Cor. 4:6-7 "Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other. For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive?" Now if you did indeed receive it?"
James 1:17 "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning."
1 Cor. 15:10a "But by the grace of God I am what I am, ..."
Doxology - Praise God, from whom all blessings flow
Written in 1674 by an Anglican Bishop named Thomas Ken
"Praise God, from whom all blessings flow"
"Praise Him, all creatures here below"
"Praise Him above, ye heavinly host"
"Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost"
1 Cor. 4:8 "You are already full! You are already rich! You have reigned as kings without us - and indeed I could wish you did reign, that we also might reign with you!"
Matt. 19:23-24 "Then Jesus said to His disciples, 'Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
2 Cor. 12:9-10 "And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
Phil. 2:3 "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself."
1 Cor. 4:9-13 "For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now."
Rev. 3:17, 18 "Because you say, I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing - and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked - I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see."
1Pet. 5:5-7 "Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for 'God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you."
1Cor. 4:14-21 "I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Therefore I urge you, imitate me. For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church. Now some are puffed up as though I were not coming to you. But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord wills, and I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power. For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power. What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?"
